Bronx streets turn deadly in one week
June 2 to June 9 saw 18 crashes in the Bronx with 18 serious injuries and one death.
From June 2 to June 9 the Bronx logged 18 crashes. Eighteen people suffered serious injuries. One person died.
On June 5 a fire truck struck a 33 year old woman. She was crossing Intervale Avenue by Chisholm Street. She died. This Bronx alert has fired 11 times in the past 90 days. It has also fired 11 times in the past 365 days. Borough President Vanessa L. Gibson should press DOT for faster street redesigns and lower speeds now.

- A 49-year-old fire-truck driver hit a 33-year-old woman as she crossed Intervale Avenue by Chisholm Street. She died.
- A driver hit a 48-year-old man near 1019 Trinity Avenue overnight, leaving him with a leg injury and a reported fracture or dislocation.
- A driver hit a 17-year-old pedestrian on E 164th Street in the Bronx. The teen was left semiconscious with a fracture and possible dislocation in an arm or hand.

How we calculate this
We calculate these costs using a method developed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, or NHTSA. It gives one set of costs for crashes with injuries and another for crashes with no reported injuries.
Crashes with injuries cost much more because the method includes things like lost work, medical care, and long-term harm. NHTSA says crash costs include "lost productivity, medical, legal and court costs, emergency service, insurance administration, congestion, property damage, and workplace losses."
These are estimates, not bills. "Other harm" is the part of the broader estimate that goes beyond direct bills and insurance claims. It captures pain, disability, and lost quality of life.
