How were these numbers calculated?

We used NYC’s Motor Vehicle Collisions datasets for Crashes (h9gi‑nx95), Persons (f55k‑p6yu), and Vehicles (bm4k‑52h4). We filtered records to Manhattan Community Board 5 and the window Jan 1, 2022–Sep 26, 2025. We counted total crashes, people injured, serious injuries, and deaths from the People table, then matched to crash locations. Data were accessed Sep 26, 2025. You can start from the crash dataset [here](https://data.cityofnewyork.us/Public-Safety/Motor-Vehicle-Collisions-Crashes/h9gi-nx95) and apply the same filters.

How we calculate this

We calculate these costs using a method developed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, or NHTSA. It gives one set of costs for crashes with injuries and another for crashes with no reported injuries.

Crashes with injuries cost much more because the method includes things like lost work, medical care, and long-term harm. NHTSA says crash costs include "lost productivity, medical, legal and court costs, emergency service, insurance administration, congestion, property damage, and workplace losses."

These are estimates, not bills. "Other harm" is the part of the broader estimate that goes beyond direct bills and insurance claims. It captures pain, disability, and lost quality of life.
