In the past month, multiple serious crashes harmed people walking and biking, including a cyclist and a child injured at Flatlands Avenue and Louisiana Avenue on Sep 19, and two separate SUV–pedestrian crashes on Flatlands Avenue and at Linden Boulevard. Source: NYC Open Data crash records.

How were these numbers calculated?

We analyzed NYC’s Motor Vehicle Collisions datasets for Crashes, Persons, and Vehicles, filtered to Jan 1, 2022–Sep 24, 2025, and mapped to Brooklyn Community Board 18. We used police‑reported injury severity, person type, and contributing factors to count deaths, serious injuries, times of day, and high‑injury corridors. Data were accessed Sep 24, 2025. Just after midnight on Flatlands Avenue, a driver making a right turn hit another SUV. Four people were hurt, including a rear-seat passenger with a knee/leg/foot injury.
According to the police report, at 12:17 a.m. on May 19, 2026, on Flatlands Avenue in Brooklyn, the driver of a 2025 Acura RDX making a right turn hit a 2017 Mercedes GLS 450 that was going straight. Police listed five occupants total. Four occupants were reported injured, including the Acura’s driver (head injury with whiplash) and a right-rear passenger with a knee/lower-leg/foot injury.

A driver got distracted and hit a parked BMW on Schenectady Avenue. Two drivers reported pain and nausea, and one was listed semiconscious.

The injured driver’s bodily injury was listed as back, with an internal complaint. Other occupants were listed; the report does not describe their injuries.

How we calculate this

We calculate these costs using a method developed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, or NHTSA. It gives one set of costs for crashes with injuries and another for crashes with no reported injuries.

Crashes with injuries cost much more because the method includes things like lost work, medical care, and long-term harm. NHTSA says crash costs include "lost productivity, medical, legal and court costs, emergency service, insurance administration, congestion, property damage, and workplace losses."

These are estimates, not bills. "Other harm" is the part of the broader estimate that goes beyond direct bills and insurance claims. It captures pain, disability, and lost quality of life.
