From Jan 1, 2022 to Sep 24, 2025, police-reported crashes in District 17 killed 40 people and injured 4,698. In 2025 so far, seven people have died and 893 have been injured. These figures come from NYC’s open crash datasets.

Where are the danger zones?

Westchester Avenue and East 163 Street appear repeatedly in crash records for this district. Nighttime hours, especially around 3 AM and 5 AM, show a heavy toll in deaths and injuries, according to NYC Open Data.

What has Council Member Rafael Salamanca, Jr. done on street safety?

He co‑sponsored and voted for a law to remove abandoned vehicles quickly. He has backed efforts to curb fake plates and pressed the city to fill Bronx DOT leadership. He has also engaged on delivery app safety and last‑mile warehouse regulation in Council actions and hearings.

How were these numbers calculated?

We used NYC Open Data’s Motor Vehicle Collisions datasets (Crashes h9gi-nx95, Persons f55k-p6yu, Vehicles bm4k-52h4). We filtered for Council District 17 and the window 2022-01-01 to 2025-09-24, then summed deaths and injuries, and reviewed hourly and location fields for patterns. Data was accessed Sep 24, 2025. News reports citing police say a driver in a BMW hit a 51-year-old cyclist at Bruckner Boulevard and Longwood Avenue just before 9:30 p.m. on Aug. 18, 2026, then fled after a chain-reaction crash that also injured the Hyundai driver. Reports identified the cyclist as Angelo Camera, while ABC7 and CBS spelled his surname Camara. Family members said he was a mechanic and father of five riding home from work. Sources agree police were searching for the BMW driver, but they differ on the BMW's color, travel direction and the exact order in which the cyclist, a Hyundai and parked cars were involved.

A firefighter driving FDNY Engine 82 hit and killed a 33-year-old woman on Intervale Avenue near Chisholm Street late Friday. The rig was headed north with lights and sirens, officials said.
According to the police report, a 34-year-old firefighter was driving an FDNY fire truck north on Intervale Avenue near Chisholm Street at 11:07 p.m. on June 5 when he hit a 33-year-old woman crossing the street. The woman was killed; the report lists crush injuries to her abdomen and pelvis. Police recorded pedestrian error or confusion. How we calculate this

We calculate these costs using a method developed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, or NHTSA. It gives one set of costs for crashes with injuries and another for crashes with no reported injuries.

Crashes with injuries cost much more because the method includes things like lost work, medical care, and long-term harm. NHTSA says crash costs include "lost productivity, medical, legal and court costs, emergency service, insurance administration, congestion, property damage, and workplace losses."

These are estimates, not bills. "Other harm" is the part of the broader estimate that goes beyond direct bills and insurance claims. It captures pain, disability, and lost quality of life.
