On June 2 on Starling Avenue a driver failed to yield. A 7 year old boy was hit. Police said he had a head injury and was unconscious. This district has triggered five alerts in 90 days. It has triggered five in 365 days. Pressure on Council Member Amanda Farías can force fixes on these streets.

- A 37-year-old driver blew the right-of-way on Starling Avenue and hit a 7-year-old boy. Police said the child suffered a head injury and was unconscious.
- Police recorded driver inattention as a van driver made a U-turn on Westchester Avenue and hit a 21-year-old pedestrian who was crossing with the signal. He suffered a shoulder and upper-arm bruise.
- On the Cross Bronx Expressway Ramp, a driver followed too closely and hit another driver. Two drivers reported injuries, including whiplash and knee pain.

How we calculate this
We calculate these costs using a method developed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, or NHTSA. It gives one set of costs for crashes with injuries and another for crashes with no reported injuries.
Crashes with injuries cost much more because the method includes things like lost work, medical care, and long-term harm. NHTSA says crash costs include "lost productivity, medical, legal and court costs, emergency service, insurance administration, congestion, property damage, and workplace losses."
These are estimates, not bills. "Other harm" is the part of the broader estimate that goes beyond direct bills and insurance claims. It captures pain, disability, and lost quality of life.
