Council District 23 racks up 30 crashes in one week
In seven days, Council District 23 saw 30 crashes and six injuries. Three were serious. No one died.
From May 31 through June 7, Council District 23 had 30 crashes. Three people suffered serious injuries. Three more had moderate injuries. There were no deaths.
On June 2, a left turning sedan hit a 52 year old motorcyclist on E Hampton Boulevard near 58th Road. The rider had internal injuries to the hip and upper leg. This district has triggered 11 times in 90 days and 11 times in 365 days. Council Member Linda Lee can push a 20 MPH local speed limit and street redesigns now.

- A driver making a right turn hit a school bus on Hillside Avenue at 211th Street. The bus driver, 51, was injured.
- On the Long Island Expressway at night, a driver changed lanes and hit another vehicle. An 18-year-old driver reported a neck injury.

How we calculate this
We calculate these costs using a method developed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, or NHTSA. It gives one set of costs for crashes with injuries and another for crashes with no reported injuries.
Crashes with injuries cost much more because the method includes things like lost work, medical care, and long-term harm. NHTSA says crash costs include "lost productivity, medical, legal and court costs, emergency service, insurance administration, congestion, property damage, and workplace losses."
These are estimates, not bills. "Other harm" is the part of the broader estimate that goes beyond direct bills and insurance claims. It captures pain, disability, and lost quality of life.
