What We Know

On Feb. 6, 2022, Ackeem Chambers was driving a 2015 Hyundai Sonata west on Eastern Parkway in Crown Heights with three passengers. Prosecutors said NYPD officers tried to stop him after erratic driving; he accelerated, went through a red light at Rogers Avenue and collided with a Toyota Solara that had the right of way. The city crash record lists unsafe speed and traffic-control disregard for the Hyundai. Eighteen-year-old Jada Rollins, a right-rear passenger, was taken to Kings County Hospital and pronounced dead. Four motorists were injured. Chambers later pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter and was sentenced to 3 to 9 years in prison.

A traffic stop preceded the fatal crash

The city crash record places the collision at Eastern Parkway and Rogers Avenue at 2:09 a.m. on Feb. 6, 2022, with two sedans involved, one person killed and four motorists injured.

Prosecutors said Ackeem Chambers was driving a 2015 Hyundai Sonata erratically on Eastern Parkway when NYPD officers attempted a traffic stop. Chambers accelerated, drove through a red light at Rogers Avenue and collided with a 2007 Toyota Solara that had the right of way.

Jada Rollins was riding in the rear seat

The city record identifies the person killed as an 18-year-old female passenger seated in the right rear of the Hyundai. Prosecutors identified her as Jada Rollins and said she was taken to Kings County Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Prosecutors said another passenger suffered severe head trauma, a third passenger was treated at Kings County Hospital, and the driver of the Toyota Solara was also treated. The city record counted four injured motorists.

Investigators cited speed and a red light

The official crash record lists unsafe speed as a contributing factor and records unsafe speed and traffic-control disregard for the Hyundai. Prosecutors said investigators determined Chambers was driving about 62.7 miles per hour before the crash and found no indication that the Hyundai’s brakes were deployed.

Chambers pleaded guilty and was sentenced

The Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office said Chambers pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter in September 2023. In November 2023, Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Danny Chun sentenced him to 3 to 9 years in prison.
