Driver Lost Control on LIE, Killing 18-Year-Old Passenger

A late-night loss of control on the expressway

The crash happened at about 12:20 a.m. on Dec. 1, 2022, on the westbound Long Island Expressway near the Van Wyck Expressway. QNS reported, citing the NYPD, that the 20-year-old driver was traveling at a high rate of speed before he lost control, veered into a guardrail, and the sedan overturned.

The official record lists the involved vehicle as a westbound 2018 BMW sedan with three occupants. QNS reported that no other vehicles were involved.

Katherine Lin died; two others were hospitalized

Katherine Lin, an 18-year-old woman from Elmhurst, was taken by EMS to NYC Health and Hospitals/Elmhurst, where she was pronounced dead, QNS reported. The official record identifies the person killed as an 18-year-old female passenger.

QNS reported that EMS took the driver to NYC Health and Hospitals/Elmhurst in critical but stable condition, and took the other passenger, an 18-year-old female, to New York-Presbyterian Hospital-Queens in critical but stable condition.

Speed was cited in the record and in police reporting

The official crash record lists unsafe speed as a contributing factor. QNS reported that police said the BMW driver was traveling at a high rate of speed before he lost control.

NYPD investigators kept the case open
