Driver Turning Left Hit and Killed Yu Chen in Douglaston
A 46-year-old driver making a left turn from southbound Marathon Parkway hit Yu Chen as she crossed Horace Harding Expressway in a Douglaston crosswalk, and the official record lists failure to yield in the crash that killed the 50-year-old pedestrian.
What We Know
Yu Chen, 50, of Rego Park, was crossing Horace Harding Expressway at Marathon Parkway on the morning of June 14, 2023. Police said a 46-year-old woman driving a 2004 Toyota Camry was turning left from southbound Marathon Parkway to eastbound Horace Harding Expressway when she hit Chen in the crosswalk. The official record says the pedestrian was crossing with the signal and lists failure to yield by the driver. EMS took Chen to North Shore University Hospital, where she died on June 16. Police said the driver remained at the scene and was not arrested at the time.
The turn through the crosswalk
Police said the driver of a 2004 Toyota Camry was making a left turn from southbound Marathon Parkway to eastbound Horace Harding Expressway when she hit Yu Chen as Chen crossed the expressway within the crosswalk. The official record describes the sedan as traveling south and making a left turn before the crash.
Yu Chen died two days later
Chen, a 50-year-old Rego Park woman, suffered severe head trauma and was taken by EMS to North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset. QNS reported that she died there on June 16, two days after the crash.
No arrest at the scene
Police said the 46-year-old driver remained at the scene and was not arrested. QNS reported that the NYPD Highway District's Collision Investigation Squad was investigating the crash.
