Rider dies after e-scooter fall on Queens Boulevard
Derrick Cristobal, 31, was fatally injured while riding an e-scooter at Queens Boulevard and 73rd Street on Dec. 19, and police said he died 11 days later after losing control and hitting his head.

Derrick Cristobal, 31, was riding an electric stand-on scooter east on the Queens Boulevard service road near 73rd Street in Woodside on Dec. 19, 2023, when police said he lost control, fell, and hit his head. Officers found him conscious and alert, and EMS took him to Elmhurst Hospital. QNS reported that he was initially listed in stable condition, then worsened and died of head injuries on Dec. 30. Police said the rider fell on the service road
Police from the 108th Precinct responded just before 4:30 p.m. on Dec. 19 to the Queens Boulevard service road near 73rd Street, where officers found Derrick Cristobal conscious and alert with head injuries. The NYPD later said Cristobal had been riding an electric stand-on scooter eastbound when he lost control, fell to the pavement, and hit his head.
Derrick Cristobal was on his way to his daughter
MEAWW, citing the Daily News, reported that Cristobal was on his way to pick up his two-year-old daughter from day care. His longtime partner, Vanessa Balondo, told the Daily News, "It's really hard. I don't know how to start again without him."
He died after his condition worsened
EMS took Cristobal to Elmhurst Hospital, where police said he was initially listed in stable condition before his condition deteriorated. QNS reported that he died on Dec. 30 from head injuries, 11 days after the crash.
QNS reported that an NYPD spokeswoman could not say whether Cristobal was wearing a helmet. At the time of that report, police said there had been no arrests and the NYPD Highway District's Collision Investigation Squad was continuing its investigation.
