Norwood News, citing police, reported that the Honda Pilot driver and the moped driver were traveling north on University Avenue when they collided, and that police described the moped as traveling at high speed.
A Teenage Passenger Died at the Scene
The official record identifies the person killed as a 15-year-old female passenger seated at the left rear of the moped. Police told Gothamist that the passenger was pronounced dead at the scene after officers found her unconscious and unresponsive with significant injuries.
Press reports gave different spellings for the victim’s name: Gothamist reported Daphne Juan, Norwood News reported Dafney Juan, and News 12 reported Dafne Juan. Norwood News reported that she was from Manhattan.
Reports also differed on the moped driver’s condition. Gothamist said police identified the driver as 18 and later listed him in stable condition, Norwood News said EMS found an 18-year-old male with minor injuries and took him to St. Barnabas Hospital in stable condition, while News 12 reported the driver was in critical condition. The New York Post and Bronx Times described him as 19 and said he was critically or gravely injured.
The SUV Driver Stayed at the Scene
Police accounts cited by Gothamist, Norwood News, the New York Post and News 12 said the 22-year-old Honda driver remained at the scene. Gothamist and Norwood News reported that he was not injured, and the New York Post and News 12 reported that he had not been charged at the time of their reports.
News 12 reported that its crew saw the Honda driver undergoing sobriety tests with NYPD officers. The outlet also reported that the moped driver would be in police custody after the crash.
Investigators Cited Passing and Speed in the Moped Record
The city crash record lists improper passing or lane use as a contributing factor for the collision. The moped vehicle record lists improper passing or lane use and unsafe speed; the SUV vehicle record does not list a contributing factor.
Gothamist reported that officials said it was still unclear what caused the crash. Norwood News reported that the NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad was continuing its investigation.
A Memorial Grew at the Corner
News 12 reported that a memorial was growing at the intersection after the crash and that family members gathered near the place where the girl died. The outlet quoted Laura Gomez, identified as Dafne’s cousin, saying, “She was quiet and happy, always in the house.”
Norwood News reported that police later identified Joshua Matthew, 18, of West 172nd Street in Mt. Eden, as the moped driver and said he was charged with criminal possession of stolen property, unauthorized use of a vehicle and reckless driving. The article said it was not immediately clear whether those charges related to the crash or to a prior incident.
