A driver hit a pedestrian at East New York Avenue and Broadway
The crash happened in Brooklyn at about 9:55 p.m. on July 3, 2025. The official record lists one person killed: a 36-year-old male pedestrian at the intersection of East New York Avenue and Broadway.
Police told ABC7 the driver was traveling westbound on East New York Avenue when they hit the man and kept going. First responders took him to Brookdale University Hospital, where he died.
The official vehicle entry lists a sedan traveling west and going straight ahead, with center-front damage.
Broadway Junction sits on a heavily crash-burdened corridor
The crash happened at East New York Avenue and Broadway, by Broadway Junction. The Daily News reported that several major roads meet there and that a construction zone was present at the time of the crash.
On Broadway in Brooklyn, CrashCountNYC counts 1,689 crashes, 923 injuries, 56 serious injuries and 7 deaths since 2022.
Nyron Shaw was later identified by name
Later coverage identified the man who died as Nyron Shaw. The official record and early news reports listed the pedestrian as 36; Brooklyn Eagle later described Shaw as 37.
The Daily News reported that Shaw had been staying at a shelter down the block and that his family believed he was leaving to visit a friend. His father, Alim Shaw, told the paper, "I couldn't believe it. I was in disbelief."
A witness account reported by News 12 said Shaw was walking with a woman and pushed her out of the way before the impact. The Daily News later quoted witness Miriam Durieux as saying, "He pushed the lady out of the way and he got the impact of the vehicle."
Police arrested Zaria Pope nine months later
Police arrested Zaria Pope, 24, on April 7, 2026. The Daily News reported that police charged her with criminally negligent homicide, leaving the scene of a fatal accident, reckless endangerment and traffic violations.
Pope pleaded not guilty at arraignment in Brooklyn Criminal Court and was released without bail, according to the Daily News.

Speed was central to police and witness accounts
News 12 reported that witnesses described the driver moving at a high rate of speed and hitting multiple construction barriers before the fatal impact. News 12 also reported that police set up a traffic checkpoint the next morning to reduce speeds.
Public reports did not describe the car the same way. The official record lists a sedan; early Daily News coverage said the driver was in a gray Ford, News 12 reported a silver sedan, Brooklyn Eagle reported a gray sedan, and later Daily News coverage said police alleged Pope was driving a 2019 Kia.
