How were these numbers calculated?

We used NYC Open Data’s Motor Vehicle Collisions datasets (Crashes h9gi-nx95, Persons f55k-p6yu, Vehicles bm4k-52h4), filtered to NYPD Precinct 69 for 2022-01-01 through 2025-09-03. We counted deaths and injuries and analyzed hour-of-day, streets, and contributing factors using the crash and person tables. Data was accessed Sep 3, 2025. You can start from the crash table [here](https://data.cityofnewyork.us/Public-Safety/Motor-Vehicle-Collisions-Crashes/h9gi-nx95) and filter by precinct=69 and the date window.

Where are the worst spots in Precinct 69?

Rockaway Parkway and Glenwood Road show the highest death counts in this period, with Flatlands Avenue and Avenue L also high in injuries and deaths, based on the crash records for 2022–2025 from NYC Open Data.

According to the police report, at 12:17 a.m. on May 19, 2026, on Flatlands Avenue in Brooklyn, the driver of a 2025 Acura RDX making a right turn hit a 2017 Mercedes GLS 450 that was going straight. Police listed five occupants total. Four occupants were reported injured, including the Acura’s driver (head injury with whiplash) and a right-rear passenger with a knee/lower-leg/foot injury.

A driver making a left turn hit a sedan driver on Avenue K at E 85th Street. The 44-year-old driver reported internal back injuries.
According to the police report, at 4:30 p.m. Thursday on Avenue K at E 85th Street in Brooklyn, a 44-year-old man driving a sedan was injured when a driver in a station wagon/SUV was making a left turn and hit him. The injured driver’s bodily injury was listed as back, with an internal complaint. Other occupants were listed; the report does not describe their injuries.

How we calculate this

We calculate these costs using a method developed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, or NHTSA. It gives one set of costs for crashes with injuries and another for crashes with no reported injuries.

Crashes with injuries cost much more because the method includes things like lost work, medical care, and long-term harm. NHTSA says crash costs include "lost productivity, medical, legal and court costs, emergency service, insurance administration, congestion, property damage, and workplace losses."

These are estimates, not bills. "Other harm" is the part of the broader estimate that goes beyond direct bills and insurance claims. It captures pain, disability, and lost quality of life.
