A 68-year-old dump truck driver hit Melba Jordan, 45, as she rode an electric scooter at Franklin Avenue and Pacific Street, police said.
Melba Jordan, 45, was riding north on Franklin Avenue shortly after 11 a.m. on July 21, 2026, when a 68-year-old driver in a 2007 Peterbilt dump truck turned right onto Pacific Street and the crash occurred at the Crown Heights corner, police told reporters. Medics took Jordan to Kings County Hospital in critical condition, where she died. The driver stayed at the scene and was not injured. Police had not announced charges as of the initial reports, and the NYPD Collision Investigation Squad was investigating.

Crashes with injuries cost much more because the method includes things like lost work, medical care, and long-term harm. NHTSA says crash costs include "lost productivity, medical, legal and court costs, emergency service, insurance administration, congestion, property damage, and workplace losses."

These are estimates, not bills. "Other harm" is the part of the broader estimate that goes beyond direct bills and insurance claims. It captures pain, disability, and lost quality of life.
